<key-moments>Penn State 3, Hofstra 0 December 2, 2006 UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. -ñ The third-seeded Penn State womenís volleyball team swept Hofstra (30-20, 30-12, 30-19) Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Championship at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions improve to 31-2 and advance to the NCAA Seattle Regional Semifinal against Big Ten-foe Purdue next Friday at Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Wash. The other Regional semifinal pairing will also feature a familiar squad, as Ohio State will square off against host and defending national champion Washington. The NCAA Regional Semifinal berth is the 19th overall for the four-time defending Big Ten Champion Penn State womenís volleyball program and the 15th in the last 17 seasons. The Nittany Lions and Boilermakers met twice this season during Big Ten competition, with Penn State coming away with three-game wins both times. Against Hofstra, sophomore outside hitter Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) led all players with 13 kills on .435 hitting as freshman outside hitter Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) contributed 12 kills and sophomore Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.) and senior Cassy Salyer (Aurora, Colo.) both chipped in eight kills. Salyerís sixth kill of the night was a milestone for her, as she became just the 17th player in Penn State history to record 1,000 career kills and just the sixth player ever to tally more than 1,000 career kills and 450 career blocks. As a team, Penn State attacked at a .383 clip while holding Hofstra to hitting -.030. ìI thought in the first two games we served well and that allowed us to get our block in a good position,î said head coach Russ Rose. ìWe did the things tonight that we thought would be important for us to win this match.î Freshman setter Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) directed the offense with 35 kills and added six digs as sophomore libero Roberta Holehouse (Joppa, Md.) led the squad with 11 digs and three service aces. Glass and junior Kate Price (Fraser, Mich.) both tallied two aces in the win. Penn State dominated the net, racking up a season-best 21.0 team blocks while allowing Hofstra only two. Harmotto led all players with 11 blocks, her second-highest total of the season, while junior middle hitter Melissa Walbridge (Yardley, Pa.) posted seven blocks along with four kills. Glass fell just shy of her career blocking total with six as Salyer and Fawcett both posted four blocks and Hodge added three. Lauren Engle led Hofstra with nine kills as Amanda Beyersdorff and Beverly Rivera each added six. Penn State started the match off on fire, taking the first six points aided by strong Holehouse serving. A Harmotto and Glass block made it 9-3 and two Fawcett kills and a Glass ace pushed the margin to 16-6. A Hodge kill put the Nittany Lions up 19-11 but a Hofstra kill from Lauren Engle and three Penn State attack errors brought the Pride to within five at 20-15 but a Harmotto solo block halted the run. A double block from Walbridge and Salyer made it 25-18 and a Fawcett and Walbridge block coupled with back to back Fawcett kills gave Penn State the 29-18 advantage before another Fawcett kill ended the game, 30-20. The Nittany Lions racked up eight team blocks in the first game alone as Fawcett added eight kills. Once again the Nittany Lions came out of the gates on fire, taking the 10-3 lead on back to back blocks by Fawcett and Harmotto. Kills from Fawcett and Salyer pushed the score to 14-8 and a Harmotto kill coupled with a Harmotto and Salyer block gave Penn State the 17-8 lead. A Salyer putaway and consecutive Hodge kills sparked a 5-0 Nittany Lion run to put them ahead 22-9 capped by a Price ace. A Harmotto and Glass block made it 25-12 and aided by strong serving from senior Kris Brown (Wooster, Ohio), Penn State captured the next five points, including two Fawcett kills and a solo block, to take the game, 30-12. Penn State as a team attacked at a .517 clip in the game, recording 18 kills on 29 attacks with only three errors as six players posted at least one kill. Blocking was again the name of the game in the third stanza, as a Walbridge and Glass block coupled with another from Walbridge and Salyer put Penn State ahead 11-6. A Harmotto kill and block by Harmotto and Glass pushed the Lions to leading 16-12 and a Walbridge and Salyer block along with kills from Hodge and Salyer made it 21-14. Back to back Hodge and Harmotto putaways pushed the lead to 25-17 as a Fawcett kill made it 28-18 before a Hofstra ball-handling error ended the game, 30-19.
